After years of exploring countless countries by both land and sea, I’ve come to truly understand just how delicate our world’s most beautiful and ancient destinations have become. Increased tourism and the effects of climate change are taking a serious toll, threatening the preservation of these irreplaceable places and their archaeological treasures. It’s heartbreaking to witness firsthand how fragile these sites have become.

Countries like Italy are starting to take action, restricting large cruise ships from entering sensitive ports like Venice. And while this change was necessary to protect such places, it has also opened up new, more thoughtful ways to travel. Smaller cruise ships and commercial yachts, which carry 500 passengers or less, are now able to access these locations without the overwhelming impact of mass tourism.
I recently experienced this shift firsthand on a Windstar Cruise from Venice to Athens aboard one of their beautiful sailing yachts, the Windstar Surf, departing right from Venice proper. I have not visited Venice in 10 years, I was thrilled to return and begin my journey there. The difference was remarkable. The massive cruise ships that once towered over the city were gone, and the streets were far less crowded. While there were still plenty of tourists, the chaotic throngs I remembered from years ago were absent. It felt like Venice had a chance to breathe again.
What I love most about these smaller ships is the sense of comfort and elegance they offer. When I talk about luxury, I don’t mean it in a showy or pretentious way. It’s about the care and attention you receive when you step on board. Everything is designed to make you feel completely at ease, allowing you to unwind and truly enjoy your journey.
For an entire week, you don’t have to think about anything except the incredible ports, the delicious food, the breathtaking scenery, and the enriching excursions. And there’s something so special about the intimacy of a smaller ship. With fewer passengers, you get the chance to connect with others in a meaningful way. That’s what makes these cruises genuinely exceptional.

More to come on my next blog, I'll take you on that journey from Venice to Athens aboard Windstar’s Windsurf, a beautiful 340-passenger sailing yacht. We'll explore four incredible countries along the voyage—Italy, Croatia, Montenegro, and Greece. I can’t wait to share all the unforgettable experiences with you!
